Today there was a guest speaker that most if not all the athletic teams at Ohio Northern had to attend this morning. The guest speaker's name was Bill Macbeth and his presentation was all about winning with class.
Now, I know ever since I have been little and played a sport or have been associated with any type of competition, I was told to have good sportsmanship. A lot of athletes, specially at the collegiate level know that win or lose, you should always shake the opponent's hand, tell them good game. But good sportsmanship means different things to different people. To me, good sportsmanship is letting your performance do the talking and letting everyone respond to it as they will, if you know personally that you did the best you good that game.
But, during the guess lecture, Macbeth talked about how winning with class can be applied to all aspects of your life, more importantly the aspects that have some meaning and that are a priority to you and only you. During the lecture he also talked about the steps that can take you to find your foundation and to use it for good in all aspects of life.
To start the steps, he had a 1-2-4 step process that would help shape young athletes into making the world better and to win with class. His 1-2-4 mindset system is all based off getting a solid foundation inside of you to help you make decision based on everything in your life to make it where you want to go in the future. Macbeth talked about sitting down and writing down all of the priorities that you have personal and to act through those to make decision in everyday life to make sure your foundation is always solid.
Macbeth really opened my eyes to know that winning isn't just applied to situations in athletics, but it is also applied to everyday life. Macbeth was inspired to write his new upcoming book Winning with Class to help shape the world as much as he can little by little. He wrote the book based on an 8-year-old little girl who was diagnosed with cancer when she was one. She made a lemonade stand and decided to raise 1 million dollars to help the children, family, and her friends in the hospital that she had been with since she was diagnosed. To be inspired by a little girl who made her goal off selling lemonade for 50 cents is incredible and the story should be told to everyone. Let's all try to win with class in all aspects of our lives.
Until next time,
Lauren
Lauren,
ReplyDeleteI thought the speaker was really good and a much needed reminder. Not a lot people these days think about winning with class. Most athletes that are good, think they are the best and so cocky. I liked how the speaker brought up famous and successful athletes that win with class. I found it interesting overall. Keep up the good work!
Im actually upset i couldn't catch the speaker because of my class schedule. Reading off your post, i can surely agree that winning at every aspect in life is most important. Football has taught me so many life lessons that i'll never forget. I look at life so much different when getting taught those life lessons through a sport. Great stuff! Go bears.
ReplyDeleteLauren, I didn't attend this presentation, but after reading your post I wish I had. I may not be an athlete but I can absolutely see how the speaker's process and mindset can be applied to everyday life and to sports. His book sounds good and I'm definitely considering picking up a copy for myself. You did a great job on this post, here's to winning with class in all aspects of our lives!
ReplyDeleteLauren, I thought that the speaker had tons of very powerful information to share. I think that as an athlete, it is very important to win with class. He presented information that is useful on and off of the field. Participating in sports has taught me so much and he helped me expand and learn so much more. I am glad you enjoy it!
