Social media is always a hot topic when it comes to basically anything. It helps in business by promoting a product or service, it helps with people trying to speak up about an issue, and it can even just be a new way to connect with past or current people in your life. In the text book social media is defined as electronic communication , which creates online communities to share information, ideas or messages. Yes social media can be a useful thing, but how much are we all actually putting into social media?
More than half the people in the world, 4.66 billion people to be exact, are online. Online doesn't just mean social medias such as Twitter, Snapchat, or Instagram it can mean like streaming Netflix or shopping online as well. The billions of people who are online are mostly online on their cell phones. About sixty-seven of the worlds population uses the internet on their cell phones. which makes up for most of the time spent online.
Social media has evolved over the years tremendously. It has surpassed the time spent on televisions. Most teenagers can't even remember the last time they watched television. Most the time, these days, people watch movies and televisions series online using the streaming app such as Netflix or Hulu. And to compare numbers, about 4.20 billion people in the world are active media users. So almost all of the people that are online use social media as part of their online activity.
Over the years the global social media over time have increased by at-least seven percentage or more each year going from 2016 to 2021. With that being said, the average hours a person is actively on the internet with any device is about seven hours every day. The time an average person is on social media is about two and a half hours a day. Which, compared to mine is around the same amount.
With the new generation having internet and mobile devices around and with them twenty-four seven. The likelihood of the increase of social media activity will increase as well. The world may need the internet, but is it always going to be a positive thing?
Until we meet again,
Lauren
Your last line, “The world may need the internet, but is it always going to be a positive thing?” really resonates with me. There are tons of applications of the internet of which they can be positive or negative. Social media is certainly not a perfect application of the internet but there are definitely worse applications of the internet. Opening up banking to mobile devices has greatly expanded people’s ability to access their money, but is has also made it much easier to scam people. Social media has expanded peoples’ ability to always be connected, but this constant connection has downsides as well. It is important to always consider the pros as well as the cons of everything, and the internet as a whole is no different. I am majoring in Computer Science so the internet will be very relevant in my career, so considering the repercussions of any services I develop will be something I keep in mind to try to balance the good and the bad I may be releasing onto the internet.
